Balzola, a Lantania Group company, begins renovation of Warsaw’s Defilad Square

  • The Polish company adds new projects worth a total of 30 million euros in the first six months of the year

Madrid, 20 July 2023. Balzola Polska, a Lantania Group company, has started the renovation of Warsaw’s emblematic Defilad Square, which will include the creation of a Central Square within the square. The City Council of the Polish capital has awarded Balzola a contract worth 11 million euros for the construction of this Central Square, which will be located in front of the Palace of Culture and Science, inside the Defilad Square. It is one of the key elements in the development of the New Warsaw Centre, a plan that aims to transform the heart of the city into a comfortable, accessible, and green public space.

Balzola will build an area with more than 100 new trees, thousands of bushes, lawns, and a pond, creating a new green space in the heart of the capital. The company will create a meeting place for the people of Warsaw, which will also be used for the organisation of cultural events. The total area to be rebuilt is approximately 20,000 square metres. The project also includes the planting of 4,000 metres of new grass, as well as more than 40 species of bulbs and plants, with 11 species of bushes and trees such as lime, ash, acacia, and magnolia.

The work, which has already begun, is scheduled to last 14 months. Excavations during the work will be carried out under strict archaeological supervision, as it is expected to unearth valuable artefacts in the centre of Warsaw.

Warsaw’s Defilad (Parade) Square is considered the fourth largest urban square in the world and the largest in the European Union. Built in the 1950s, it was used by the government of the Polish People’s Republic for propaganda parades, hence its name. Over the years, it has lost its importance and has become the site of a large market.

Balzola is also working on other projects to develop the new Warsaw Centre. The company is constructing two tramway crossings and is carrying out the reurbanisation of Marszałkowska between the streets of Królewska and Solidarności. The total value of the two contracts is 2.6 million euros.

30 million euros worth of new projects

In the first six months of this year, Balzola was awarded contracts worth 30 million euros. In addition to the three projects in the Polish capital, the company is designing and building 2.7 km of the national road No. 48 in Kozience for 8.8 million euros and building a swimming pool in the town of Zuromin for 6.1 million euros. Balzola will build a full-size 25-metre-long, six-lane swimming pool. There will also be a leisure pool, a children’s pool, and a spa area next to it. The facility will be able to accommodate 205 people at a time.

In addition, Lantania’s Polish subsidiary will carry out the reconstruction of Sienkiewicza street in the city centre of Lodz for 2.4 million euros. These works will include the construction of 6,000 square metres of road surface and pavement for cars and pedestrians, as well as a new underground network with trees and green spaces.
