Lantania and Oga to apply artificial intelligence and operations research to water management

Madrid, 14 June 2023. Lantania Aguas and Oga have signed a strategic collaboration agreement for the development and commercialisation of innovative solutions for the optimisation of industrial processes in the integral water cycle. The Lantania Group subsidiary and the Andalusian company which specialises in the automation and optimisation of critical business processes through the application of Artificial Intelligence will work on improving the efficiency of projects related to the integral water cycle, from water catchment to drinking water treatment, distribution and purification.

The main objective of this alliance is to develop, for subsequent commercialisation, innovative solutions to improve industrial water management processes. Both companies will work together to present and offer these advances to the national and international market.

Efficient water management is a challenge for everyone; our country loses 23% of the drinking water already treated through distribution networks every year, according to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. Spain is also one of the European countries with the greatest water stress, with decreases of up to 25% expected throughout the country and 40% in the southeast of the peninsula by the end of the century. “We cannot waste time, we must focus on the implementation of new technologies in the water sector. With this agreement with Oga, we at Lantania want to promote the digitalisation of the sector to make it more efficient and sustainable,” says the CEO of Lantania Aguas, Pedro Almagro.

Oga extracts the full potential of data to transform and optimise critical business processes from the hybridisation of techniques such as Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research. Oga’s CEO, Juan Carlos Rubio, explains that the technology developed by the company “generates significant savings by mitigating the associated business risks and contributing to the sustainability of the processes on which it operates. These challenges are urgent for the water sector and in Lantania we have found the perfect partner to address them and with whom we can develop high-impact solutions.”

Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research are the technical bases on which the Andalusian company Oga develops predictive or prescriptive models that permanently learn from the historical behaviour of business processes. From a huge data processing capacity that will allow them to identify patterns, correlations or anomalies, classify or segment relevant events or entities, predict behaviours or values and, in short, to anticipate and exponentially improve the way of managing and deciding complex processes. With its portfolio of solutions, it has an impact on 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

First desalination plan projet

The alliance between Lantania Aguas and Oga aims to develop new automation and optimisation solutions that improve the management of the integral water cycle, as well as the efficiency of its infrastructures, building economic savings and improving the sustainability of the processes. In the first phase, innovative solutions based on Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research will be developed to reduce energy consumption and the use of chemical additives in desalination processes.

A working group made up of experts from Oga and Lantania has already started the analysis and development of solutions that will reduce the energy expenditure and the consumption of chemical additives in these infrastructures. The major cost involved in seawater desalination is energy, which represents more than 50%-60% of production costs.

The objectives of this alliance will focus on the development and market introduction of disruptive solutions that will digitally transform the industry by optimising these complex processes.
