Lantania commissions the 50 MW Calatrava II Solar Farm in Ciudad Real, Spain

  • The installation, built for Verbund Green Power Iberia supplies power to 25,000 homes

Madrid, 31 October 2024. Lantania commissioned the Calatrava II Solar Farm, located in the province of Ciudad Real, in September. The facility built by the Infrastructure, Water and Energy Group for Verbund Green Power Iberia has an output of 50 MW, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 25,000 homes.

The plant occupies 117 hectares on which the company has installed 76,600 photovoltaic solar panels that generate 100 GWh of clean energy per year, preventing approximately 27,000 tons of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere each year.

The solar farm injected electricity into the grid for the first time last June and was commissioned gradually until it became operational in September. The construction of the plant, which involved around 150 employees, took eight months. Lantania’s energy division has carried out comprehensive work that includes the design and engineering of the solar farm, the construction of the civil and electrical works, equipment and material supplies, commissioning and all the tests for the correct operation of the installation.

Notable works carried out by Lantania on this project included the construction of a 3 km underground transmission line between the solar plant and the S/E Manzanares 400/220 kV substation.

The Calatrava II plant is the first solar installation to be built by Lantania for Verbund, Austria’s leading electricity company. The high-quality standards achieved in the Calatrava II solar farm make it a benchmark for future projects with this client.
