Lantania Completes Renovation of the Mérida and Badajoz High-Speed Railway Stations

•  Passenger buildings, accesses and platforms completely refurbishe

Madrid, 3 March 2022. Lantania has concluded the remodelling works of the Mérida and Badajoz stations for Adif-AV. The company, in a joint venture with Estel Ingeniería y Obras, has carried out the complete refurbishment of the platforms, accesses and passenger buildings, providing them with all the necessary services to accommodate the high-speed railway. It has made modifications to buildings as well as their accesses and surroundings, which includes adapting platforms to the new clearance gauges. Roofs, road surfaces, and facilities have also been upgraded.

Construction at the Mérida station, the largest and busiest in the Extremadura network, has focused on creating a new space, which can easily be seen and identified from the access plaza and where the pedestrian area has been separated from the vehicular traffic area. In addition, a commercial and customer service area has been added to the terminal building.

At the Badajoz station, the exterior space has been reorganised, prioritising pedestrian traffic over vehicular traffic with a large plaza that is integrated into the neighbourhood itself. This terminal has also undergone a complete remodelling of its interior spaces.

The March issue of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) magazine contains a report on the works at Extremadura railway stations, including those carried out in Badajoz and Mérida. Both have followed common criteria and have been completed according to four principles: urban integration, architectural remodelling of building facades, universal accessibility, and improvement of the travel experience through the introduction of new technologies and Adif spaces for travellers.
